I recently rediscovered the value of oatmeal in the morning. I grew up with Quaker Instant Classic Oatmeal so my taste for the oats were a bit saggy. Recently, a friend made me some for breakfast so this recipe is based on her ideas.

1/2 cup oatmeal
1 tblsp sugar [if desired]
1 tblsp Nut* butter
a handful of dried fruit**
1 cup boiling water

* Nut: your desired choice of Peanut, Almond, Cashew, etc.
** Dried Fruit: I prefer Cranberries because it has higher Vitamin C content which helps in the absorption of Iron (from the oatmeal). I have also used blueberries and cherries with great success.

The Chicago CTA is going bankrupt and screaming about closing routes unless it gets “emergency” state funding?

Let’s do some math:
[possible solutions at the bottom]

Income:
my assumptions:
6 hrs / day [Rush hour: 7am - 10am and 3pm - 6pm.]
60 min / 1 hr
1 bus / 10 min
5 buses [In my neighborhood, 5 bus lines 151, 156, 134, 143 & 77.]
40 passengers / bus.
$2 / passenger

6 x 60 / 10 x 5 x 40 x 2 = $14400 / day for 5 buses during rush hour only.

Expense:

Buses:
http://www.suntimes.com/news/695338,CST-NWS-ctaweb13.article

[says 150 buses cost $13.2 million on a 12 month lease.]

my assumptions:

$13,200,000 / year
12 months = 1 year
150 buses / lease
1 month = 30 days
5 buses
$13,200,000 / 12 / 150 / 30 x 5 = $1,222.22 / day for 5 buses.

Gas:

my assumptions:
10 miles / gallon per bus.
10 miles / trip [from my neigbhorhood to loop round trip]
$4 / gallon fuel.
5 buses
6 hrs / day
6 trips / hr

6 x 6 x 5 = 180 trips / day
180 x 10 = 1800 miles / day
1800 / 10 = 180 gallons / day
180 x $4 = $720 / day on fuel for 5 buses.

Drivers:
http://www.careeroverview.com/bus-driver-careers.html

[says In 2002, intercity bus drivers earned a median hourly wage of $14.22.]

So let’s inflate that for 5 years.

From Tom’s Inflation Calculator http://www.halfhill.com/inflation.html

We get $16.55.

my assumptions:
5 buses
1 driver / bus
6 hrs / day
$16.55 / hr

5 x 6 x $16.55 = $496.5 / day

Totals:

my assumptions:
$14400 income / day from passenger sales during rush periods
$1,222.22 expense / day for a lease for 5 buses
$720 expense / day on fuel for 5 buses
$496.5 expense / day on wages for 5 drivers

$14400 - $1222.22 - $720 - $496.50 = $11,961.28 profit!!!

So what would you do with $11,961.28 in one day?

Possible leaks in the CTA:
1. Top CTA employers making too much money
2. Unions
3. City of Chicago Taxes / Corruption*

* Corruption means taking without giving.

my solution:
1. Fire all employees.
2. Hire back drivers, train operators, maintenance under the following conditions:

a. No Unions

b. No Pension

c. Vacation FULLY PAID:
1st Year: no vacation.
2nd Year: 1 week
3rd Year: 2 weeks
4th Year: 3 weeks
5th Year: 4 weeks
6th Year: 5 weeks
7th Year: 6 weeks (max)

d. Wages:
1st Year: Drivers & CTA Operators: $20 / hr. Maintenence: $30 / hr.
2nd Year: Drivers & CTA Operators: $30 / hr. Maintenence: $50 / hr.
3rd Year: Drivers & CTA Operators: $40 / hr. Maintenence: $70 / hr.
4th Year: Drivers & CTA Operators: $50 / hr. Maintenence: $90 / hr.
5th Year: Drivers & CTA Operators: $60 / hr. Maintenence: $100 / hr.

e. Health / Dental / Vision Full Benefits for you and spouse + 2 kids while employed.

f. Percentage of Interest generated from profit:
1st Year: 5%
2nd Year: 10%
3rd Year: 20%
4th Year: 30%
5th Year: 35%

other options:
split the CTA into small private companies, each company owns 1 route of either bus or train.

ride your bike.

Myspace what a pile of shit. The “you can make your page look like anything” crapola irritates the beejesus out of me. And for whatever reason don’t you dare open more than one myspace page using a multi-tab browser or you will co-create a cacophony of incongruent melodies, which does bring back distant memories of outdoor raves where sound bleed over was commonplace. The “my myspace designed by the-dude-that-should-not-be-a-web-designer” should be pulled out his Fancy desk chair and tarred & feathered. Lastly, the lack of ad control on your myspace page is the final nail in the coffin.

As bad as myspace is its uber-popular, and everyone organization, band, group, collective, or cult has (as their main website) a myspace page. I get shivers when I see these links please visit our site :: h*tp://myspace.com/we-have-more-friends-than-you-cult. Myspace does provide some good networking tools though tribe.net does a better job, and Facebook even tops tribe. Facebook is centered around which networks you belong to, and there is even special requirements that you actually have to be part of a network to say you belong. As compared to tribes on tribe.net or groups on myspace.com, Facebook does it right.

In other words if you are ::
13 - 17 yrs old please use myspace.
18 - 20 [or you think buringman is king OR that crystals procured your last job] please use tribe.net
21 - 103 please use facebook.com

In all fairness, I do pages on each of these. I do plan however to spend most time on Facebook and less time on the other 2, but all sites are networking tools. In my opinion its the same concept as having multiple IM accounts, and using a IM program which supports multiple chat protocols, like Miranda-IM, but I digress.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=695873273
http://www.tribe.net/talkderby2me
http://www.myspace.com/talkderby2me

Final words ::
Pay $3 / month for your own hosting account, and setup a content management system (CMS) like drupal, or a blog like wordpress. Then go choose a free theme design from the interWeb that works with either of these platforms. After that your main website will be XHTML 1.0 compliant with a URL address of http://my-own-name.com

A very inspiring mix from a highly talented dj and a super fun and friendly person. Its my favorite dj mix tape of ALL time. A smooth mixture of trance & psy-trance. Also this mix has my favorite transition of all time around the 3rd to 4th track: Polyploid -> Hallucinogen. Brilliant.

From his site:

Ultimate psychedelic acid, goa & cybertrance with 1,754% more colors than other psy-trance.

Download this mix or Play this mix now.
The recording is from tape so the sound quality isn’t digital and the kick seems to drift around in stereo. Perhaps I smell a remake? Also a tracklist would be sweet!!

Ok. I wanted to detail each day of the cleanse, but I didn’t make the time to write. However day 13, nearing the end. I feel great, thinner, and craving a cooked meal. I recently purchased 8 cookbooks for $30 at the Printer’s Row Book sale weekend.

What I told myself over and over during the fast, “Eat smaller portions!!” I can eat any foods in small doses spread evenly throughout the day. Also note when I am thirsty vs hungry by the dryness of my tongue.

Its very hard to socialize on the cleanse. Usually when around people, food comes into play as dinner, snacks & drinking. “No thanks, just water for me.” And that savory food, I can almost taste the sauce oozing down my throat.

The first 6 days of the cleanse were the most difficult for me. The time when your stomach and bowels are emptied. The taste of salty water makes me nauseas, but I did keep on the laxative tea for 8 days. I still purge once a day. Its a hot & yellow mixture, yum.

I have 2 problems I have to deal with when I start eating regular food again. I use food to escape bad feelings & I feel guilty to leave a plate with any food on it.

Yesterday I spent drinking only liquids and gathering supplies.

I have prepared 8 lemonade cocktails for today.

At the end of the day around 10p, I was very tired and sleepy. Though I was working until 2a, I left at 130a. When I got home I put the kettle on to make some hot tea, then I sat down in a chair, and woke up 4 hours later. Luckily there was no fire. Is it a good thing to sleep like a rock?

I had 4 bottles today. I usually have around 5-8 bottles. Since I was out of the home at 3p, I only had 1.5 bottles, since it brings unpleasantness to the anus. I’d rather be at home if my anus is on fire!

I think it will be a good cleanse.

Looks good on paper. A new-fangled web hosting technology is merely a waste of time. Although, they did refund my $20 as per their 30 day money-back guarantee.

Almost every-other web hosting company uses what is known as Shared hosting. They have one Web Server with anywhere from 1 to who knows? number of clients. Each client can host a range of websites from 1 to unlimited. With this traditional web hosting model, the server could become overloaded very quickly and its resources [ CPU + RAM ] will be in short supply. Hard drive space in these situations is usually unlimited because of the use of an NAS.

Enter the Gridserver technology. To alleviate the problem with running out of CPU + RAM, the Gridserver is designed in the method of a Computer Cluster. Basically, instead of 1 computer the Gridserver can support unlimited machines. It is unknown how many machines are actually being used. So in theory, this is a great solution to the limited resources by oversupplying the CPU + RAM demands. However I noticed the Gridserver’s implementation of a cluster to be buggy at best. For Example, 1 out of 10 page loads results in a 403 Forbidden error. These errors occur when the web server does not have access to the file you are asking it to provide. So how did it access the file during the other 9 times?

Mediatemple’s answer to this issue:
“It looks as though the redirect isn’t working and it’s trying to call up an error document that isn’t accessable. A thing to remember is your domain on the grid is name based rather than IP based. How are you pointing to “mydomain.com”? Since you aren’t using our name servers we are unable to troubleshoot DNS issues.”

It’s true, I was using outside DNS.

So DNS is working 9 out of 10 times? And that 1 time DNS doesn’t happen to function properly, in short it tells the web server, “hey you don’t have access rights that file!” Wow, that is the some powerful DNS! Its my understanding DNS is used for the SOLE purpose of translating mydomain.com into an IP [ xx.yy.zz.aaa ] and back again. Since when does DNS actually control who has access to files, I thought that was root’s job? Perhaps in the Gridserver world, everyone is root?

Anyway it cost me 2 days time to learn Mediatemple is another host to avoid.

What?
2 TBsp Grade B or C Maple Syrup
1/10 Tsp Cayanne Pepper
10 oz Water

Drink as many as you need for at least 10 days.

In the evening you should have an Herbal Laxative Tea such as “Smooth Move“.
In the mornings perform a salt water flush. Drink about 1 qt of water with 1 TBsp of salt. Wait 5 min and see what happens.

This is the 3rd time I have performed the Master Cleanse. My primary goal is weight loss. And to learn I don’t need to eat as much food as I consume. A fist size amount of food per sitting is all that’s really needed.

In addition, during the first 2 cleanses, I noticed my overly dry feet and dandruff were nearly diminished. I would like to confirm this finding once more.

If you have a website, please please please, put up your own favicon!

Its easy, here is a free favicon creation tool. Basically create any square [height = width] image and upload it to create your own favicon. After your favicon is created. Upload to the root folder of your website. Some sites may require the favicon.ico file in every folder.

I enjoy Tiesto for his mixing ability. Some of what he plays is interesting, but most is too gay. Interested, I found an interview of his. He mentioned James Zabiela as “Best mixing skill has James Zabiela without a doubt. This guy is amazing technically.”

So I searched for some dj mixes from this amazing technically guy.

I came across a Four.2 mix which is split into 5 parts.

I had trouble getting them so I thought I would repost them here:

Part 0
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

So they are very technically saavy. Its not really my typical electronic style, but the mixes are for lack of a better word, perfect. And he does a great job of bring in all sorts of samples and FX. Apparently he djs with an EFX1000.

Apparently there is a previous Four mix and a Four.3 out there.

I hope you enjoy the mixes.

Backup files to your gmail account. Each file is limited to 10MB. And the number of files

Download this file.

http://4112u.com/gmailfs110.zip

Enter your gmail account info.

Now you can drag files to your gmail account from your PC as a backup.
You are limited to the amount of space in your gmail account.

One last thing read this below, you must setup a filter in GMAIL to
archive the files out of your inbox in gmail.

\———————————————————————
How It Works

GMail Drive works by directly manipulating emails inside your Google
Gmail account.

When you copy a file to the GMail Drive folder, it internally creates
and sends an e-mail to your account. The file content is sent as an
e-mail attachment.
When the Shell Extension needs to display a directory listing of your
Gmail account, it submits a Gmail search query using the sparsely
documented Gmail Protocol API. It searches for all e-mails starting with
the word ”
GMAILFS”. From the returned search result, it builds a directory
structure, which is displayed in the Shell Extension.

Because all GMail Drive files appear as regular e-mails in your Google
Gmail account, you may want to set up a Gmail filter that automatically
moves all e-mails containing “GMAILFS” to the archived folder. This way,
GMail Drive files won’t clutter up your Gmail account.

A typical GMail File looks like this inside your Gmail account:

GMAILFS: /folder/filename.txt [123;n;1]

You can find the actual file content inside each mail as an e-mail
attachment.

The file size is limited to 10 Mb because this is the attachment size
limit Google imposes on all mails. Since the filename must be available
on the message subject line, the full filename length is limited to
about 80 characters.

I just noticed something interesting about my posture.

Sitting in a local wifi hotspot, Intelligentsia, and I see someone, sitting talking to freinds, with his arms crossed in front of him. And I think “Why are his arms crossed?, I do the same thing.”.

My Answer: Because he has a pot belly. And so do I for that matter. Perhaps I am embarrased and want to hide my pot belly.
Interesting.

Perhaps I should note this and instead, accentuate my pot belly (for fun!). This is done, by placing my arms under the pot belly, instead of crossing them over the pot belly.

In relation, its amazing how the simpilest things can dissolve stress.

I found myself constantly trying to work to help ease the stress, but it only compounds as I push past problems that appear out of thin air, as well as problems related to real life.

At some point I break.

I take a walk, ride my bike. And stress be gone. Lots of bike thinking on open road. Open road aside from a few red lights, bikes in Chicago have much freedom (at least for now). I am sure car drivers will complain and WIN so bikes will be impounded if we buzz through stop signs or stop waiting for green.

“hey the bike lanes are wide open”

Passing a line of 30 cars in traffic is a really good feeling! A strong massive feeling that dissolves my problems.

My home is a television-free zone, though some mornings start with NPR.

My bed contains a down comforter, and and smooth faux-silk sheets.

I enjoy art and artists.

I enjoy leaving the city with a tent, a pair of hiking boots and a bag
of food. Excitement exists inside of a tent on hard ground while the
rain is thick.

My coffee is near white, though I prefer Yerba Mate.

I am reading Naked by David Sedaris.

and Laughter is good medicine.
